Graduate Certificate in Social Marketing & Public Health

Brief description: The social marketing and public health certificate program is offered to experienced health educators or other public health professionals who wish to develop the skills needed to develop, implement and evaluate social marketing programs. The certificate program emphasizes the translation of theory and knowledge into evidence-based practice.

The University of South Florida, College of Public Health, has been a leader in social marketing in public health for over 10 years. Each year, USF holds a Social Marketing and Public Health Field School and hosts an international conference in social marketing and health, which has drawn over 3,500 participants during the past 11 years. The University of South Florida also houses a CDC funded Prevention Research Center which is developing a community-based approach to social marketing.

The certificate program was developed for the following groups: Public/community health educators prepared at the masters level (minimally), graduate students enrolled in public health programs that are pursuing a public health or health-related education, or public health educators who are employed in local, state and federal public health agencies that have education and experience in public health education (minimum of 3 years public/community health practice), and other individuals who may be interested in completing the certificate program including public health educators, public health program planners and administrators working at local, state and federal levels.

Credit toward graduate degree: Up to 12 hours of certificate related course credits may be applied based on approval of degree-seeking advisor. The student must meet GMAT/GRE, and other graduate program admission criteria. All credit hours completed in the Social Marketing and Public Health certificate program can be credited to a graduate program in the Department of Community and Family Health within five years of completing the certificate program, AND upon approval of the student's Department of Community and Family Health academic advisor. Additional programs to which certificate course work may apply are the Master's of Public Health, Master's of Science in Public Health, and the Dual Master's of Public Health and Master's of Art in Anthropology.

Transfer credit: All students who wish to pursue graduate certificates must be admitted to the graduate certificate program before a second graduate certificate course is completed.

Standardized tests: International students must submit a TOEFL score when English is not the native language. A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test or 79 on the web-based test is required.

Admission requirements: A master's degree from a regionally accredited institution in health education, public health or health-related field is required, OR

  1. Current enrollment, or 15 hours in a master's-level health education or public health program, OR
  2. Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three years public/community health education experience
  3. Students enrolled in other health related programs, or who do not meet these requirements will be considered on a case-by-case basis per recommendation of the certificate advisor

  3. A 250-word letter of interest stating your objectives in pursuing this course of study

Registration process: First, consult with the certificate program advisor and obtain an electronic course permit if necessary. Then go to http://usfonline.admin.usf.edu/, the link to OASIS, USF's on-line registration system. Follow directions given on-line.

Total program hours:
Eighteen (18) credit hours are required for completion of the certificate. There are nine (9) hours of required courses:

  • Student's must take both of the following courses:
  • PHC 6411 Introduction to Social Marketing (3)
  • PHC 6705 Formative Research Methods in Social Marketing (3)
  • In addition, select one of the following three courses:
  • PHC 6934 Marketing for Non-Profit Organizations (2 or 3 hrs.) or
  • PHC 6148 Strategic Planning and Health Care Marketing (3) or
  • PAD 6934 Public and Nonprofit Marketing and Communications (3)

There are nine (9) hours of elective courses, which are to be selected with the certificate program advisor's approval. Electives will be selected based on the student's experience and career goals/plans. Examples of elective courses suggested for the target audience are:
